I usually like to use these materials for quick figure studies. I prefer to work on a toned pastel paper which functions as a middle ground onto which a few strokes of light or dark or both are enough to stimulate the imagination, allowing the figure, like magic, to emerge.

Ina, from South America. Not one of my favorite models, simply because her posing is not very creative. So I’m always glad if  a few drawings make the cut. Actually, the highlighted one included here is a pretty good likeness of her. Conté pencil highlighted with conté crayon on toned pastel paper. 32.5 x 50 cm or 13 x 19 3/4 in.

Three four minute poses. Conté pencil on toned sketching paper. 35 x 50 cm. or 13 3/4 x 19 3/4 in.

Luc, one of my favorite models. He takes great poses and often wears flowing white pants. Makes for interesting textures and flowing lines.

Two fifteen minute poses, one above and one here below. 32.5 x 50 cm or 13 x 19 3/4 in.

Two four minute poses. Decided to use pastel paper for the quick sketches tonight. I usually don’t do that since it is more expensive. But it does possess a different tactile quality than the cheap sketching paper – allowing for more drag on the conté crayon. Sometimes you want that, sometimes you don’t. 32.5 x 50 cm or 13 x 19 3/4 in.

A good session with a few keepers. The model posed both clothed and naked. I enjoyed using a sienna colored pencil to seek out the form on this warm gray toned paper. It creates a very low complimentary color vibration.

A great model tonight. Short, muscular, self-contained. Reminded me of our friend, Gordon. My favorite spotlighted here. Saying much with an economy of means, allowing the figure emerge from the paper.

Here below, four fifteen minute poses. Note the difference between using sienna and/or a darker brown conte pencil to define the figure. The darker line creates more contrast and definition. But is that what I want? Conté pencil highlighted with conté crayon on toned Canson pastel paper. 32.5 x 50 cm or 13 x 19 3/4 in.

I’m still experimenting, getting used to drawing on sienna toned paper. Tonight, even though the model was not particularly inspiring, I found that it was possible to draw in the whole figure with a sienna colored conté pencil. This renders a very low contrast image which allows me to develop details from there. In this case, the head area, portrait style. The highlighted one here is an example of that approach.

Tonight felt like a bit of a breakthrough for me. I’ve just started using the sienna toned paper. But which color to use to draw the figure? And then what pastels to use for the highlights? It needs to become intuitive – as it did in this spotlighted one.
